In recent years there have been umpteen hysterical calls for a guard of honour to be given to Celtic by Rangers upon their completion of a successful league campaign. It’s often presented as if this is something which was previously a regular occurrence which should be revived.
In fact, it’s never happened in the Scottish top flight.

In 1964, when Rangers were riding high, Celtic beat Slovan Bratsilava 1-0 which meant they progressed to the semi-final of the European Cup Winners Cup.
The next game was a Scottish Cup Quarter Final and Rangers applauded Celtic onto the field for their fine achievement – and prompted played them off it – winning 2-0.
The guard of honour didn’t really work as it should have as they won the home tie against MTK Budapest at Celtic Park 3-0 only to lose 4-0 away.
It wasn’t pre-advertised – it seems to have been a spontaneous gesture of goodwill.
And that was that. So, let’s hear no more of it.
