According to Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook, Newcastle have submitted a new offer of £35 million (€40.4m/$47.1m) plus £5m in add-ons in their bid to sign Brentford striker Wissa. The Magpies have been interested in the DR Congo international throughout the summer and were given more encouragement to step up their pursuit when the 28-year-old deleted all mention of the Bees from his Instagram account.

Newcastle's start to the season has been heavily disrupted by the drama surrounding Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker wants to join Liverpool and released a statement lashing out at Newcastle on Tuesday night, claiming they had broken promises made to him, though the club responded by denying any kind of gentlemen's agreement.

Brentford, meanwhile, had been waiting until they managed to snare a replacement before sanctioning a departure for Wissa. They have brought in forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth in a £37 million (€42.7m/$50m) transfer and may now be more willing to let Wissa, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, depart for St James' Park.

Wissa will hope Brentford approve Newcastle's most recent offer so he can depart and resume playing Premier League football. He was left out of the squad for the 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest after manager Keith Andrews judged his head wasn't in the right place.
