Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, according to reports in France, and his arrival this summer is likely to mean the end for Wayne Rooney.
What’s the word?
Big news broke in France last night as French TV channel Canal+ reported that Antoine Griezmann has agreed personal terms with Manchester United and is set for a huge move to the Premier League this summer, which will see him unite with close friend Paul Pogba.
The move, which is likely to see Griezmann earn an equal amount to Pogba (£17.7m-a-year), is subject to Manchester United agreeing a fee with Atletico Madrid. With Griezmann’s contract running until 2021, it could mean that the Red Devils start next season with the world’s two most expensive players.
However, the reports have been disputed by Manchester United themselves as a source told PA Sport that no deal has been agreed.
What have United said?
Reported by ESPN, Manchester United have denied that any agreement is in place for the 25-year-old but the continued links between the French international and Old Trafford mean there is definitely some interest at the club- and they may just be ensuring things aren’t confirmed too prematurely.
Of course, there’s a lot of work to do and agreeing terms with Griezmann can be seen as the easiest part of the deal to complete- with the real challenge being persuading Atletico Madrid to part ways with the striker- with recent reports from Spain declaring his release-clause stands at around £95m.
It’s likely that Atletico will want that figure to be met and it could see United break the world-record for a transfer for the second season in a row, following Paul Pogba’s return to Old Trafford from Juventus last summer.
