Tottenham target Thomas Meunier is ‘so close’ to signing for Borussia Dortmund, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Jose Mourinho is keen to recruit the Paris Saint-Germain star, as he is out of contract with the French champions at the end of the season, and is on his way out the door, along with his teammates Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva.
Spurs have already spoken to Meunier, who is a close friend of Toby Alderweireld, but Romano tweeted the defender has rejected Mourinho and is nearing a move to Borussia Dortmund instead.
As it stands, not even a personal phone call from the Portuguese will be enough to persuade him to change his mind, as he has moved closer to signing a four-year-contract with Dortmund.
This is a huge blow for Mourinho to add to the mounting list of problems he faces, as Dele Alli and Japhet Tanganga will miss the Premier League clash with Manchester United.
The Spurs boss has been hit by multiple setbacks over the course of his brief reign so far, as Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko all succumbed to injury.
Furthemore, Mourinho is well aware he will be restricted by a limited budget in the summer, so he will have to rely on signing free agents and making swap deals to try to improve his squad.
At the moment, the Lilywhites are eighth in the Premier League, four points behind his former club Man United, who are now managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Mourinho’s side have lost the last two meetings between the teams, which will no doubt be playing on his mind, as they must win in order to keep their hopes of a top four finish alive.
Now, his efforts have seemingly been in vain, as Meunier has reportedly rejected an offer from Spurs. The Portuguese will now have to turn his attentions elsewhere when the transfer window opens.
